WINTER DRYING
Will washing dry outside in winter?
Yes—washing can dry outside in winter. Lower temperatures slow evaporation, but temperature is only one part of the drying process.
Look for dry, bright and breezy conditions
A crisp winter day with low humidity, sunshine and a steady breeze can be more useful than a mild but saturated, still day. Wind moves moisture away from fabric while sunshine supplies valuable energy, even when the air feels cold.
Start early and use the strongest window
Winter daylight is limited and conditions cool quickly late in the afternoon. Put washing out near the beginning of the best forecast window, prioritise lighter items and allow extra time for seams, waistbands and pockets.
Expect a finishing period indoors
Heavy items may feel almost dry outside but retain moisture in thicker areas. Bringing them indoors for a short, well-ventilated finishing period can still reduce tumble-dryer use substantially.
Avoid frost, fog and saturated air
Fog and very high humidity provide little capacity for moisture removal. Freezing conditions can stiffen wet fabric and greatly extend the process. Use the local score and hourly view rather than assuming every bright winter day will behave the same way.
