How long does it take for clothes to dry outside?
In good outdoor conditions, light clothes may dry in around 2–4 hours, an everyday load in 3–6 hours, and towels or jeans in 5–8 hours or longer. The weather, fabric thickness and how thoroughly the load was spun all affect the result.
Typical times for drying washing outside
These broad estimates assume the washing has completed a normal spin cycle and has room for air to move around it. Hanging clothes outside to dry can be quick in favourable weather, but actual times vary considerably.

Light garments can dry in a few hours during warm, dry and breezy weather, while towels, denim and layered fabrics may take considerably longer. Cool conditions are not automatically poor: dry air, sunshine and steady movement can still produce useful drying.
The five biggest influences
- Humidity: drier air has more capacity to take moisture from fabric.
- Sunshine: solar energy warms the material and supports evaporation.
- Wind: moving air replaces the damp boundary of air around each item.
- Temperature: warmer conditions generally support faster evaporation.
- Fabric and spin speed: thick items and wetter loads contain more water to remove.
Spacing makes a difference
Leave enough room for air to move around each item, open pockets and avoid folding thick areas over the line. Hang shirts and tops so that the breeze can reach both sides. Even an excellent forecast cannot compensate fully for tightly packed washing.
Use a drying window, not a single daily symbol

Questions about hanging clothes outside to dry
Can clothes dry outside when it is cloudy?
Yes. Sunshine speeds evaporation, but clothes can still dry outside when cloud, reasonably dry air and a useful breeze allow moisture to escape.
Will clothes dry outside in winter?
They can. Winter drying is slower, but low humidity, sunshine and moving air can still provide a useful drying window even when temperatures are cool.
Do clothes need direct sunshine to dry outside?
No. Direct sunshine helps, but airflow and low humidity can dry washing without it. Mostly shaded or sheltered washing will usually take longer.
Why can washing become damp again in the evening?
As the air cools, relative humidity often rises. Washing left outside after the useful drying window can absorb moisture or stop drying, even when no rain is forecast.
