DRYING GUIDE

How long does washing take to dry outside?

There is no single drying time for every load. Fabric weight, how thoroughly the washing was spun and the changing weather all affect the answer.

Typical conditions matter more than temperature alone

Light garments can dry in a few hours during warm, dry and breezy weather, while towels, denim and layered fabrics may take considerably longer. Cool conditions are not automatically poor: dry air, sunshine and steady movement can still produce useful drying.

The five biggest influences

Spacing makes a difference

Leave enough room for air to move around each item, open pockets and avoid folding thick areas over the line. Hang shirts and tops so that the breeze can reach both sides. Even an excellent forecast cannot compensate fully for tightly packed washing.

Use a drying window, not a single daily symbol

Conditions often change significantly between morning and afternoon. HangWashing examines the forecast hour by hour to identify the part of the day offering the strongest balance of drying potential and low rain risk.
